If you want to pursue a career in industrial engineering, you must have a degree from an accredited university. Industrial engineers generally have an extremely high level of science and math ability acquired from school or the military. Here are some tips to help you become an industrial engineer.

  1. Get a bachelor’s degree. The basic requirement for all potential industrial engineers is a 4-year university degree in math, science, engineering or other applicable field. There is fierce competition in the jobs market, so be sure to major in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering.

    Participate in internships whenever possible because any experience you have will improve your chances of being hired over others who do not have any experience outside the classroom. Ensure that your university is certified by The Institution of Engineers Singapore.

  2. Get a master’s degree. It is not uncommon nowadays for industrial engineers working in the field to get a master’s degree on the company “dime”.

    Companies will gladly pay for employees to return to school since industry competition is fierce and technology is perpetually changing. Some recommended courses are industrial engineering and operations research, industrial management or production planning and control.
  3. Get certified. Singapore requires that engineers get an engineering licence. In order to become an industrial engineer, you need about 3 to 5 years of work experience past your university coursework.
