Marketing managers’ responsibility differs from company to company. They are responsible for the search and development of customer bases for the company’s product. Marketing managers work closely with their marketing assistants and the market research team.

This demanding career usually requires long hours and several years of experience but is often rewarded with highly competitive remuneration packages.

1) Start off by attaining the recommended education. Often, the minimum education requirement would be a degree in mass communications, marketing, business management or related fields.

2) Begin cultivating your marketing knowledge early by interning in a marketing company. As an intern, you gain valuable experience by shadowing a marketing manager. Internships are a great way to gain industrial insights while still in school.

3) Spend 3 to 5 years in an entry level job such as a marketing assistant, sales representative or a market researcher. This will give you the necessary experience you need to climb up the career ladder.

5) Demonstrate your willingness to relocate if necessary. This can increase your chances for promotion.

6) Join management-training programmes that your company offers. You may also choose to further your studies and pursue a major relevant to your marketing career.

Competition for management careers can be quite stiff. Be mentally prepared to start out with an entry level job and spending a few years to work your way up.
