Hiring rate of older workers rises
THE employment rate of older Singaporeans aged 55 to 64 has gone up in the past nine years, from 47 per cent in June 2004 to 65 per cent in June 2013, said Senior Minister of State for Manpower Amy Khor on Monday.
Some 99 per cent of local private sector employees who turned 62 in the year ending June 2013 were offered re-employment. Dr Khor urged employers who are unable to offer re-employment to eligible staff to consider giving them a one-off employment assistance payment instead.
New batch of NMPs sworn in
THE new batch of nine Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) was sworn in on Monday after taking their oath of allegiance at the start of Parliament sitting. All of them are first-time NMPs and will serve for a two-and-a-half-year term.
The nine are lawyer Chia Yong Yong; Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Thomas Chua; unionist K Karthikeyan; social entrepreneur Kuik Shiao-Yin; Board of Architects Singapore president Rita Soh; ex-national sailor Benedict Tan; labour economist Randolph Tan; historian Tan Tai Yong; and banker Ismail Hussein.
