Emotions are energies that fuel our behavior, speech and actions. Conventionally, most of us are taught to suppress our emotions so that we can be logical and rationale in our decisions, speech and actions.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t make use of it to strength your emotional maturity for better performance at work.

Let’s take a look at 5 Emotional Keys to manage, master and leverage on our emotions for a breakthrough performance.

1. Emotional Awareness

To be successful at any form of marketing, you must first have a clear understanding of who your ideal customer is. When you try to be everything to everyone, you are nothing to no one, so focus on one customer segment. Once you’ve identified your ideal target buyer, do all you can to understand that person and figure out where you can find more who are like them.

2. Emotional Control

Although suppressing negative emotions is not healthy, there are occasions where we are not able to express that emotion. You will need Emotional Control to keep the negative emotion down and do what you need to do to resolve the situation.

After you have rectified the situation, find a private corner and have some time to yourself. In your mind, revisit that incident and get in touch with that negative emotion again. Let it arise in you, and feel it until it dissolves away.

3. Emotional Engagement

While negative emotions have a downside effect on our performance, positive emotions do the opposite. When you feel positive emotions, you will naturally perform better. So the key here is to engage your positive emotions through emotional engagement.

The best way is to tap on naturally occurring positive emotions. Eat your favorite food or listen to your favorite tune to put yourself in a positive emotional state when you need it.

When it is inconvenient to create naturally occurring positive emotions, you can tap upon positive emotions from your past. Simply close your eyes and in your mind, visit a few past events where you felt positive emotions like success, happiness and motivation.

4. Emotional Freedom

Many people advocate managing negative emotions to deliver better performance and results. However, it would be tiring if we have to constantly manage our negative emotions. Achieve emotional freedom and be free from common negative emotions.

Let go of emotional baggage that you are holding inside you. They could consist of past unresolved issues, past relationships and past negative events. If there is a person or an event that still brings negative emotions in you, that’s an emotional baggage. Resolving it could mean forgiving the person, talking about the event or even seeking a professional coach or therapist to assist you.

5. Emotional Wisdom

Emotions are communication signals from our subconscious mind that tell us that something is not right and we need to pay attention to it. If a certain style of speech or action always triggers a negative emotion in you, there must be a source somewhere in your subconscious mind that needs resolution. Emotional Wisdom refers to the ability to see the message behind our emotions by recognising and finally resolving it.

Emotional Wisdom is attained if you could appreciate the not-so-nice events in life such as setbacks and relationship failures as calls for attention to your inner world. With Emotional Wisdom, you would see that whatever is taking place is just temporary and can be changed by resolving your internal conflicts.
