“Do not be fooled by simplicity,” said Karen Leong, an influence expert and a sought-after speaker, during the STJobs Workshop on Wednesday, 19 September 2012. Entitled Influential Networking – The Art of Connecting Powerfully with Anyone, Karen’s workshop helped participants understand and identify ways to charm and converse effortlessly and confidently while networking.
It can be as simple as a smile or attentive-listening – effortless, habitual and visible. These gestures gradually increase your likeability as well as respect factor as you work towards becoming a compelling influencer.
The key thing was to not be invisible. “Whatever that is not visible does not exist,” reminds Karen who explained that the Invisibles usually faded in the background and were forgettable at social events. Instead, you want to form connections and be memorable.
However, keep in mind to strike a conversation and not a sales pitch. As name cards are a “tool of business”, we should not let them do the talking but instead try to offer or exchange them only at the end of the conversation.
Ms Chelsea Tan, Advertising Director of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Magazines too acknowledged that the session has been insightful, being both “interactive and practical”.
Miss Eileen Chia, Group Advertising Director of SPH Magazines said, “The session is refreshing as it touches on softer skills, which I can develop and incorporate into both my personal and professional life.”
