SPH Media Trust

Job Description

As an Assistant Foreign Editor, you will be required to work with the Foreign Desk team of The Straits Times in selecting, commissioning and editing stories for the paper and its online edition.

The Foreign Desk provides content for online and mobile platforms as well as the features and opinion sections of the newspaper. The job requires you to work closely with our network of correspondents and stringers abroad in developing stories and producing original content for ST. It also calls for monitoring of the wires, the internet and other sources for stories, deciding on the content for use across platforms and editing them for use accordingly. You will also identify foreign wire news stories for the foreign pages that impact Singapore and Asia. News on Europe and the regional economies will also be another focus. News websites must be tracked for news on the Singapore business, political or entertainment personalities. You will occasionally put together features on a variety of topics.

It is a must that you are knowledgeable in news from around the world and have a keen interest in keeping up with the latest developments. Experience in dealing with regional political and economic issues is a plus but we expect the successful candidate to have the ability to spot good stories on a broad range of topics, including from the world of the arts, sciences and even pop culture.

Key Requirements

Minimum 5 years in journalism. Should have several years' experience in copy tasting and editing duties. Experience on the wire agency copy desk will be an asset. You must be able to head and work as a team, work with minimal supervision and demonstrate the ability to:

  • Assess, write and turn around copy for print and online.
  • Handle spot news as well as analyses and features on a wide range of topics.
  • Plan ahead in developing follow-ups and special reports.
