Job Description

The Role

The occupant of this position will work with and support senior Austrade staff at post to identify, develop and promote:

  • trade opportunities for Australian companies in the defence and security sectors and
  • investment opportunities that further Defence policy objectives

The role is based in Singapore but also covers other relevant South-East Asian markets as agreed from time to time between Austrade and Defence


Duties

In this role, you will:

  • Provide services to Australian businesses including: providing advice on market conditions, market entry strategies and regulatory environments, identifying potential customers and partners and assisting in engaging with them, and conducting market research.

  • Work with senior Austrade staff, the Defence Export Office and Defence staff at post to develop a Business Plan for the relevant market.

  • Identify market trends and develop business opportunities for Australian companies including through:

    • Working with the Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Team to identify and engage with Australian defence and security industries seeking to export and assist them.

    • Working with relevant stakeholders to develop tailored market entry analysis and strategies for individual targeted companies. 

    • Contributing to the development of multi-year defence industry engagement campaigns and initiatives as part of business planning activities.

    • Supporting global defence primes and their suppliers in their Australian investment plans, in accordance with the agreed Business Plan and when required by senior Austrade staff at post.

    • Develop additional support programs and other regional programs supported by Team Defence Australia as required.

  • Relationship Management

    • Developing productive senior level business, industry and government networks within the defence and security sectors.

    • Working closely with Austrade, High Commission and Defence staff at Post, as well as government stakeholders in Australia, to foster a collaborative relationship, with a view to meeting mutually agreed objectives and business plans.

  • Incoming delegation management, in collaboration with senior Austrade staff and Defence personnel at Post:

    • Preparing country briefings for delivery to incoming delegations on the behalf of Austrade and the Department of Defence.

    • Assisting with planning and coordinating ministerial visits, targeted inbound and outbound trade missions and Team Defence Australia attendance at relevant trade shows.

  • Actively apply Austrade business practices and maintain accuracy of information in all Austrade Business Systems to deliver accurate and timely reporting and effective relationship management.

  • Contribute to knowledge creation within Austrade and Defence, by adopting information practices, sharing knowledge and information and by embracing best practice in securing business development opportunities.

  • Work collaboratively within the Austrade network to contribute to service delivery and achieve desired outcomes, while upholding the Australian Public Service (APS) Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct and Work Health & Safety (WHS) principles.

 


Job Requirements

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

Mandatory attributes:

  • Local relevant industry or government experience, including good local industry and government connections.
  • High-level of written and spoken English language skills.
  • Advanced communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts/ideas.

Desirable attributes:

  • Business development and local industry commercial experience.
  • Understanding of Australia’s defence industry policy agenda.
  • An understanding of procurement processes and regulations pertaining to defence materiel.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to apply you must have:

  • Work Authorisation - To be eligible for employment with Austrade in this position, applicants must currently be legally authorised to reside and work in Singapore. Austrade will not be able to provide any sponsorship letter, nor be directly involved in the work visa application process.
  • Language - The position requires a highly motivated team member with high-level written and spoken English language skills.
  • Security Clearance - The successful applicant must be willing to undergo Austrade’s pre-engagement assessment process and be willing to undergo security clearance to Entry Level as a condition of employment.
